Synopsis
Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Dr. Roberta Golinkoff, renowned authors and child development experts, offer a peek inside early childhood through the marvelous marks made by young children. There's much to see and celebrate in children's scribbles much more than meets the eye. What appear to be random, accidental marks are rich in meaning, both for the children creating them, and for the adults who proudly display their colorful scribbles on office walls and refrigerator doors. Created by toddlers from across the U.S. and Canada, including a few celebrity children, the drawings and paintings displayed in this book elevate scribbling to the magnificent and important form of art it truly is.

Review
Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, the psychologist director of the Infant Language Laboratory at Temple University, and Roberta Michnick-Golinkoff, Professor of Education at the University of Delaware, continue their co-authorship projects with this study of early childhood art. The two analyze the proto-creative works of very young children. They begin with the dots and scratches of a nine month old, move on to the first finger paintings of nine-to-twelve-month-old children, then explore progressive age categories in increments of months up to the toddler making meaning from his or her scribbles. The book is published in conjunction with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It is large format and handsomely produced, with both baby photos and baby art printed in glossy, full-color page spreads. Each is identified by its artist's first name and last initial (except in the case of celebrity babies, whose parents are identified.) The end result is much ado about refrigerator art. --Children's Literature
