Fact-filled 'Ripley's book is fun for kids of all ages. By Terri Schlichenmeyer, FOR THE LEADER TIMES

You figured you could handle it. It was supposed to be the scariest movie ever. Ever, and you couldn't wait to see it. Really, you're a big kid and it couldn't be that bad ... But walking out of the theater, you were shaking, weak-kneed, and hoarse from screaming. There were parts of the movie you couldn't even watch, it was so scary. It gave you nightmares, for sure. And it was sooo cooool.

Now that you're back to Earth and sleeping again, are you ready for more thrills? Then grab a copy of "Ripley's Believe It or Not! Enter If You Dare!" It's not quite as scary as that movie, but it's 20 times cooler.
What did other kids do with their summer vacations? Check it out: a kid in Germany climbs walls by using darts as hand-holds. A girl in Hawaii wins surfing championships despite having lost both arms to a shark. In India, they play polo atop elephants.

If you're an animal lover, you'll love this: there's a picture here of a hippo attacking an alligator. There are pictures of a spider killing a bird; a snake biting his own tail; a tiny pony; and a giant spotted, fanged kitty-cat. Meant for teens-and-up, I think an 11-year-old "good reader" would have no problem enjoying "Ripley's Believe It or Not! Enter If You Dare!" If your kids are in need of back-to-school practice, here's a book they can handle

Review: Most people should know what these books are about as a new one seems to come out every year. But a quick update is that it's a collection of amazing feats, artwork, stories, and more that they package up in a nice book for all to enjoy with bright colored photos!

To start off on the negative side, I hate photos of spiders. They give me the chills and I want to throw the book. So I tended to stay away from some of the beginning sections as it deals with all sorts of creepy crawly things. Besides that though, I enjoy the Ripley books. You learn all sorts of amazing and interesting facts.

For example, one of the smallest teens in the world is Jyoti Amge from India. She only stands 23.5 inches tall, yet still enjoys a life like every other teen her age. On the page, you can pull back one of the covers and it shows you a full-length, actual size picture of Jyoti which really gives you perspective on how short she is. But again, that isn't stopping her and that's great! She's even been in a video with Mika Singh, a singer from India.

One of my most favorite sections was Artistic License. I wish I could be creative in this sense, but alas, I must enjoy the work of others. Liu Bolin is the Invisible Man. He uses paint to make himself blend into the background of various settings. The pictures in the book are amazing, even showing him in front of a telephone booth in London. It said that many that walk by don't ever notice him!

Another wonderful artist is Erika Simmons who creates pieces under the name "Ghosts in the Machine." She takes old cassette tapes and makes art of famous faces. Below you see her creation of Jimi Hendrix. How amazing is this? I love music so I think this would be something wonderful to have of a favorite singer!
Finally, you have one of my absolute favorites that were featured. I've found so many great artists I'd love to know more about from this book, but Nicholas Hendrickx is just doing something so fascinating and talented, he has to be the highlight of this review. Mr. Hendrickx takes your everyday, common fly and puts them into his pieces. Voila! You get flies skateboarding, swimming in a ducky raft,and one of my favorites...holding an umbrella! Yes, this is pretty much magic the way he gets these flies to do his bidding!

Like a carnival funhouse, RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT!: ENTER IF YOU DARE! dares you to come in, and you totally know you’re going to, no matter how many warnings are posted.
My kids love this series of hardcovers, because the photos are huge and capture all sorts of wondrous, gross, weird, disgusting things from the world over, such as six-fingered hands, a guy with 240 body piercings, a girl with an elephant face, people whose skin looks like overgrown tree bark, eyeball tattoos, sword swallowers, fried grasshoppers, cheese maggots and sculptures made entirely of hair.
In other, less-nauseating departments, you might find glowing tree frogs, a Hummer built of lottery tickets, a man who rips license plates in half with his bare hands, the contents of a vampire kit (I actually saw this one live at the Ripley’s museum in Branson, Mo. a couple summers ago), a refrigerator coffin, lingerie made of trash, bionic fingers and a pink dolphin.
If your children are into the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS books, pick up RIPLEY’S, too. They’re educational while being entertaining; they won’t even notice they’re learning something while grossing themselves out. Rod Lott

My Take on the Book
This book will provide you with your fill of strange images, facts, things and people. There were definite times when I was reading through this book where I said, really? I was amazed at some of the bizarre natural phenomena that exists as well as the things that people do to be recognized. From a man who has tattooed his eyes, to two headed animals to motorcycles made of roadkill, this book is not always for the faint of heart.

This being said though, I did find the book interesting and fascinating and even my daughters were amazed at some of the things in the book. So with this being said, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes learning about the weird, strange and unreal, as this book truly delivers!
