Language liberated humanity from the cave, led us to explore outer space, has enabled us to learn more about the universe we inhabit. Poetry liberated language from basic meaning, led us to explore inner space, has enabled us to learn more about the soul we inhabit. Poetry is the supreme use of language; an attempt to express the inexpressible Poetry is words... jewel-words, multi-faceted, casting multi-colored light on experience elastic words, stretching into unsuspected areas of meaning; suggesting there is more than seems to be there; tempting, daring interpretation. stimulating words that force us to reconsider set-pattern reactions, to allow new revelations to wash over our accepted reality, leaving us with new insights and a sharpened vision Poetry is sound... Poetry is rhythm... Poetry is pattern... Poetry is influence... Poetry is art... Artistic expressions by Freydoon Rassouli provide a linear counterpart to the mystique of the poems. His artwork vibrates with sensuality. Magnified pores, follicles, cellular motifs blend with the nocturnal shades of the spheres. Elongated passages entice to apertures, to mysterious tunnels, to the cervix of the universe, penetrable, yielding, malleable - pathways to creativity. Poetry is inspiration...Experience, historical and daily-living experience, has proven over and over that we make imprecise use of this great gift of language. For centuries we have been talking and seemingly listening but misunderstanding one another - with resulting family strife, community conflict, world wars. Poetry cannot correct this situation but it can suggest that there is a truth that lies beyond our individual realities; a truth that encompasses a greater universe than the one limited by our senses; a multi-leveled truth to be investigated, enjoyed and treasured. Poetry also rekindles our appreciation of the overwhelming natural beauty that we accept too readily as matter of course. Above all it proclaims and establishes the splendor of the human spirit that can find its rich expression only through poetry, the language of souls. Morgan Kenney 1999
