BUTCH CARTER As the oldest of seven children, Butch Carter was born into a natural life of leading. He was raised predominately by his mother along with three brothers and sisters, including co-author Cris Carter. The family's early years were spent in Midwestern America; Troy and later Middletown, Ohio, where their mother moved them to provide opportunities for her children's involvement in sports and to take a new job to support her family.
CRIS CARTER As the second youngest of seven children, Cris Carter was largely raised by his mother and three brothers and sisters, including co-author Butch Carter, in Middletown, Ohio. Cris continues to build on his reputation in the National Football League (NFL) as a star receiver, record holder and award winner. Most recently, he was named the first recipient of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for community activities in January 2000, and was the 1999 recipient of the Byron Whizzer White Award by the NFL Players Association. Ordained as a minister off-season in 1996, Cris is active in Cris C.A.U.S.E. (Christian Athletes United for Spiritual Empowerment), and the Big Brother-Big Sister program.
BORN TO BELIEVE contains universal positive messages appealing to those searching for meaning and their place in a turbulent world. Brothers Butch Carter (Head Coach, Toronto Raptors) and Cris Carter (Wide Receiver, Minnesota Vikings) detail what qualities they adopted in their individual quests to be sports stars, business entrepreneurs and positive role models.
Including quotes from people that Butch and Cris revere, this unusual flip-format book has each brother on a front, so a reader can follow the thoughts and extraordinary voice of each author. This unique format also encourages readers to answer questions and note personal goals.
We must either learn to live together as brothers or we are all going to perish together as fools. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Lord, make me so uncomfortable that I will do the very thing I fear." Ruby Dee (Actress and Activist)
Being Scared One thing Ive learned as I grow older is that I realize that everyone is afraid of something or someone. If you let your fears take over, they can take over enough of your life to make you feel that youre the only one that has these fears. You feel what youre going through is faced by you alone. Through the years and through my career, Ive realized that everyone is fearful of something. So no, you are not alone.
Whats important is not the part about being fearful, but realizing your own personal fears can be overcome. If you are fearful of the dark -- like a lot of kids -- the more you become afraid and the more times youre placed in that situation and youre forced to overcome fears, the better you can handle that fear. It becomes part of your makeup and often something that was a fear becomes an asset. You can then use this situation and past experience as motivational tool to overcome other fears......
BUTCH CARTER "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will have several of these." George Washington Carver (educator & researcher)
Community Service When I first started playing in the NBA I would spend my summers giving motivational speeches and I always had a higher goal of trying to inspire more kids than my brothers and sisters. It helps me keep my balance and remember where I came from. I also like my sons to see the contrast in how they live with how others live -- not to embarrass anyone, but to ensure my sons have compassion for others and subtly show them they are being raised in the best situation possible. If children do not learn compassion when they are young and begin to give back into their communities, just how do you teach compassion when our children become adults?
We attend many charitable events as a team and as individuals, and I encourage involvement as I think thats partly my role as an ambassador for the team. There are many unique programs that reach out into communities......
