K-Gr. 3. Totally bored, Monkey threatens Shri Shelly the tortoise to find something for him to do or suffer dire consequences. Shelly invites Monkey for lemonade and has him wash the glasses. Monkey still has time on his hands, so Shelly leans a ladder against a tree and has Monkey climb up and down the ladder hundreds of times. When fatigue finally overcomes him, Monkey realizes he could have been playing games, enjoying friends and^B other pleasures instead of climbing the ladder. Like most fables, this features a simple story and direct language, but the mildly amusing tale is better suited for school-age children rather than preschoolers. The computer-enhanced cartoonlike illustrations have a slick look. The original Zen story is appended along with the moral, but no original source is cited. Linda Perkins
