About the Author

My name is Adrian Spitters. I have extensive experience in integrated family wealth planning. I grew up on a dairy farm on Nicomen Island near Mission, BC and have immediate family and relatives operating dairy, poultry and crop farms. I began my career offering investment advice to my natural market - family, relatives and friends operating dairy and poultry farms as well as family businesses connected to the ag-community. I saw a number of families suffer because they had no advisors. Others suffered because they misplaced their trust in unskilled advisors. Advisors who should have known better. Advisors who thought THEY had all the answers. My family was one of those who suffered unnecessarily. My father, like many farmers and business owners and affluent families of his generation, kept the family finances private. My brothers and I were not involved in my father’s estate planning. All I remember is my dad telling us that he wanted the farm to stay in the family and that he had arranged to make sure that happened and that we would all be treated fairly in his will. His advisors? A lawyer and an accountant. As co-executor (with two brothers) of my father’s estate, I discovered he had a poorly executed, unworkable Will and a non-existent farm succession plan. This lack of preparing the next generation to inherit the family wealth, business or farm caused me to rethink my role in my clients' lives.
