Merchant Navy veterans from World War II say they are getting a raw deal from Ottawa for having risked their lives in battle. This controversy has been on the burner for a long time but now it's heating up as these veterans in their seventies square off against the Canadian government for recognition. During the Second World War, merchant seamen risked their lives on a daily basis crossing the Atlantic. As Winston Churchill boldly asserted, "The Battle of the Atlantic was not won by our navy or air force; it was won by the courage, fortitude, and determination of allied merchant seamen." Yet, by the end of the war, therse brave men received little recognition. In fact, thery were often scorned. In this book, waritme Merchant Navy seaman Doug Fraser tells the story from the inside.
