Derleth prepared these essays on the writings of Hamlin Garland, Glenway Wescott, Zona Gale, Mark Schorer and others in 1965 for a lecture series presented at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught classes on regional literature and writing for nearly three decades. The manuscript was discovered at Place of Hawks twenty-five years after Derleth's death in 1971 among many others long presumed missing.
