The hooked rug, often regarded as a purely American craft originating in the 19th century, was popular in Scotland and northern England in the late 18th century and may have its origins there. This book of projects by British and American artists has detailed instructions, lists of materials, and suggestions for dyeing raw materials. The designs, many of them for animals and plants in folk art style, are less sophisticated than those in Thom Boswell's The Rug Hook Book (LJ 3/1/93), but this book has better step-by-step instructions accompanying the projects.
