From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-4-- Despite the "dusty paintings, and gold-framed mirrors, silks, and tapestries" and other treasures that stuff the passageways of his island hideout, Moonrat the pirate wants more. In fact, he wants to possess the most brilliant jewel of all, the moon itself. After he finds a map that shows the location of Moonrise, he and his crew undertake a perilous journey to remote seas. There they nearly meet their end when they mistakenly capture a giant white turtle instead of the moon. Especially in her descriptions Ward employs vivid vocabulary to set the scenes and create suspense. The palette for her illustrations is equally rich. Jewel-like colors shimmer on the pages. Text and pictures are juxtaposed in a variety of ways that sustain visual interest. Only a lackluster ending mars this fine picture book, which deserves a more original conclusion to a tale of adventure. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
