Time is one of the major controlling influences of our lives. This amazing book explores the very many different meanings that time has for us and its impact on the way we run our lives. However, perhaps the most important aspect presented in this book is how we can use our internal representations of time to empower us. The concept of time-lines is a simple one. All of us have some spatial representation of where the past, present and future lie in relation to our own individual view of the world. Most of us, if we close our eyes and think of a past experience, will often find it is to our left or behind us, and our future is in front of or to the right of us. This is our time-line. Others of us will have different representations of time, and there can be many variations. However, our past, present and future memories always form a continuum. In the mid 1980's two highly innovative individuals (Drs. James and Woodsmall) discovered a completely new domain of therapy based on time-lines. Some amazing results have occurred in resolving past traumas and freeing people to get on with their lives from this development. The authors of Time-lining have now taken this technology a step further. They discuss "time", the applications of time-lines, and most importantly the development and expansion of this field. It is a practical book showing how these patterns work and how they can be used for dramatic change in oneself and others. They also enable us to explore new avenues, which is immensely valuable and will lead to even further development and utilisation. "... they launch us on our own journey in time. I urge you to take the voyage yourself. It may well be the most important trip that you ever take." Wyatt L. Woodsmall, PhD. This book will appeal to those with some knowledge of NLP, wishing to expand their horizons. Equally we recommend it to everyone interested in the concept of "time".

L. Michael Hall, PhD and Bob G Bodenhamer, D Min, are two of the brightest and most enthusiastic authors on the NLP scene today. Renowned for their integrity, their compassion, and their dedication to applying and expanding NLP into areas where it has not travelled previously, both have already made major contributions to the expansion of this intriguing field.
(form Chapter Two) The brain primarily uses the visual submodality of location to store and represent "time" for the very reason that location functions as an analogue submodality. Thus location permits us to distinguish and access sequential events events that occur one after another. Brightness and focus lack enough variation to represent "time." So most people, in most cultures, rely on size, distance, and location for representing this concept of time. This enables us to store our "time" in various places around, behind, before, above, and below us (various locations at varying distances). Further, if we step back to get an image of the overall configuration of this "time" representation, we usually have a line, a shape of some sort, picture... Thus, the origin of the term, "time-line."
Nor do auditory submodalities allow for simultaneous access of memories. Kinesthetic submodalities tend to lack the imprecision of the visual system (although we have a kinesthetic time-line process, Dilts, 1990, Hall, 1996). Thus, we tend to rely primarily on the visual system to represent the long and detailed continuum of our experiences over "time." The visual system can contain far more information simultaneously than can the auditory or kinesthetic representation systems.
Each of us has his or her own way of storing time. No single style serves as "the correct way" in contradistinction to the incorrect way. They just differ. Yet, how we store "time" does lead to various consequences in experiences, emotions, and behaviors. For example, suppose you coded your "past" directly in front of you. Would you not feel more driven by your memories? Would they not seem more "in your face" and more difficult to "get away from?"
