Introduces crazy creatures who are happy and sad, slow and fast, and other pairs of opposites

PreSchool-Grade 1. Two concept books that fall flat. Capers attempts to explain prepositions by showing a group of creatures moving in various directions, while Contrasts offers examples of opposites. Both texts are poorly written and neither succeeds as a story. Featuring strange, bug-eyed creatures, the cartoon illustrations are unappealing. For introducing opposites, stick with standbys like Kate Duke's Guinea Pigs Far and Near (Dutton, 1989) and Ann Lenssen's A Rainbow Balloon (Dutton, 1992). For books dealing with prepositions, use Pat Hutchins's Rosie's Walk (Macmillan, 1968) and Betsy Maestro's Where Is My Friend (Crown, 1986; o p.).?Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

The self-consciously wacky Crazy Creature Concepts series of paper-over-board books by Hannah Reidy, illus. by Clare Mackie, turns cartwheels to make learning visually amusing. In Crazy Creature Contrasts, a menagerie of critters, sporting an assortment of bizarre physical traits like curlicue tails, skinny striped legs and silly grins, demonstrates opposites. And a band of the egg-shaped creatures strap skates onto their skinny feet, whizzing up, down, under and through, to teach prepositions in Crazy Creature Capers. More concepts are forthcoming.
