Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Large octavo size [16x24cm approx]. Near Fine condition in a Near Fine Dustjacket. Dustjacket now protected in our purpose-made clear archival plastic sleeve. An excellent copy. Illustrated with Black & White Photographs and Maps. Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels. 215 pages. Captain John Hardie was a Scottish merchant venturer in the old style. His firm survived almost half a century of change, owning steamships for a while, but later rejecting them. His ships, Clyde-built and traditionally rigged, sought cargoes in every quarter of the globe, experiencing storms, wrecks, trade depressions and the hazards of war. When the firm of J. Hardie & Co. ceased trading in 1923, three of their ships, the Hougomont, the Killoran and the Archibald Russell, which was named after Captain Hardie's close friend and partner, continued trading under the Finnish flag of Captain Gustaf Erikson.
