Includes an introductory essay by Sharmini Pereira,a Letter to the Children of Siwa and an anecdotal stories, "Tatsumi and His Ball" and "Feng shui Master and Sheik", by Cai Guo-Qiang, an essay by Jennifer Ma about the gunpowder explosion event, an essay by James Putman about the role of myth in the project (significance of shapes of man, eagle, and eye throughout antiquity), and lists of kite-flyers, workers, supervisors, production team members, patrons, and funders. From the artist's statement: "Man, Eagle, and Eye in the Sky, 2003. Realized at Siwa Oasis, Egyptian Sahara desert. In collaboration with over 600 schoolchildren from 40 schools throughout the governate of Marsha Matruh, November 11?14, 2003. Silk and bamboo handmade kites and paint. Commissioned by Siwa Art Project, Egypt." This project is associated with Cai Guo-Qiang's "Projects for Extraterrestrials", which consisted of using large fireworks and extensive trails of blazing gunpowder that span across landscapes and building surfaces. More than 300 kites, in the shapes of man, eagle and eye, were brought to the remote Siwa Oasis of the Egyptian Sahara desert. 600 school children participated in painted the kites.
