"Goodwood Remembered" is a unique collection of previously unpublished photographs, sketches and recollections of Peter Redman, an enthusiastic spectator. As well as over 150 of his photographs from the late 1940s and 1950s, Peter Redman has included more than 50 sketches of cars and drivers of the period and 13 of his cartoons that help bring motor racing at Goodwood between 1948 and 1960 to life. The book is full of interesting snippets. Bernie Ecclestone's second place in a 500 cc race, and World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio nursing an "off-song" Cooper-Bristol into sixth place in a Formula Libre race, are just two examples. It is a fascinating insight into the range of racing cars and drivers at Goodwood in that period: from World Champions such as Fangio, Farina and Hawthorn to handicap races for lady drivers. "Goodwood Remembered" will be of great interest to anyone who remembers those times and for the huge number who follow historic motor racing or want to know more of the roots of modern motor sport.

About the Author:
Born in Emsworth, Hampshire, in 1932, Peter Redman educated at The Grammar School, Steyning, Sussex. On leaving school, he entered the furnishing trade, first in Southsea and then in Petersfield, where for some years he and his wife ran a successful Soft Furnishing Workshop. Health problems forced him to give up this work and, as a mature student, Peter Redman embarked on a three year, full-time City and Guilds course in Technical Graphics at Portsmouth College of Art and Design, gaining two diplomas. From 1979 he worked for Greenwood Airvac in Rustington for three years before joining Marconi Underwater Systems in Waterlooville as Technical Illustrator for Marketing, which included some work for Design and Development and other departments. Now retired, Peter Redman has been able to return to his love of freehand drawing as can be seen by the illustrations in this book. He started drawing cars just as soon as he was able to hold a pencil. This went hand in hand with another lifelong interest in Vintage and Classic cars. He and his wife still own their first car, a 1924 Trojan, bought as a wreck in 1956 and, once restored, served as everyday family transport for many years. It has recently returned to the road after a lengthy but thorough overhaul thanks to the kind help from some good friends. With three married daughters and seven grandchildren as well as a vintage car, life is never dull.
Review:
Published in MG Car Club Magazine (Jan 2008) by John Day Within the pages of this charming book the author has given us a glimpse of that golden era of motor sport form 1948 to 1960 at the Goodwood Circuit in West Sussex. With its glossy black and gold fly cover and its 9.5" by 7.5" format it exudes all the class and style of that bygone age. Peter Redman grew up in Bognor Regis with the circuit on his doorstep and was taken there as a teenager, about the time racing started again after the Second World War. Armed with a simple camera and youthful enthusiasm Peter went to every race in this period photographing the cards the racing and, of course, the drivers, to build up an impressive library of images. Although some of these lack the sharpness one would expect from a modern camera, they were captured with the seeing eye of the true enthusiast. The images are therefore a personal and hitherto unpublished collection of photographs, which portray the essence of racing at a unique time in the history of motor sport in the UK. The text, whilst informative, is not a learned history of Goodwood. The words set the scene and the photographs speak for themselves. Peter is also an accomplished artist and book is illustrated with his own pencil drawings from this period. These give the book a personal touch and help convey what is was actually like to be at Goodwood more than fifty years ago. All the stars of the period are given a page of their own with a portrait in pencil, details of their racing at Goodwood and a sketch of them in action. My personal favourite is of Stirling Moss at the Whit Monday Race, drifting the Kieft-Norton around St Mary's. No crash barriers, no safety run offs, just classic racing the like of which we will never see again in these Health and Safety conscious days. An added bonus is that the last 30 pages of the book are given over to reprints of period BARC Race Programmes. It is almost worth buying the book just to look at the names on the grids. They read like the who's who of racing in the 1950s. This book would make the ideal Christmas present for any fan of motor sport.
