While in Bosnia, John witnessed the worst aspects of ethnic cleansing, saw his Muslim lover and her child brutally muredered by her own people and became emotionally involved in the conflict as a result. His memoirs of the war are the first accurate depiction of the mentality of those participating in one of the bitterest conflicts ever known.
On his return MacPhee was labelled 'the evil beast of Bosnia' and a 'Monster' by national newspapers. In turn the UN unsuccessfully attempted to try MacPhee for war crimes. He was cleared of all charges.
Now, at last, he can tell his own side of this powerful story - a personal struggle for the freedom of a people and his own battle for inner peace within the chaos of the Bosnian War.
