About the Author:
Prudence Leith-Ross is the author of The John Tradescants.
From Library Journal:
Alexander Marshal (c.1620-82), an accomplished amateur plantsman, painted flowers and insects for his own amusement and is an important figure in the history of botanical illustration as well as a pioneering entomologist. Leith-Ross, a leading authority on 17th-century garden history, marshals the few documents concerning him to produce the first full-scale study of his life and of his most important surviving work, now housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Henrietta McBurney, deputy curator of the print room at the Royal Library and general editor of the series of catalogs intended to document the natural history drawings at Windsor Castle, of which this volume is the first, adds an essay on Marshal's place in the history of botanical illustration. Marshal's Florilegium (or book of illustrations of flowers) is the only extant volume of 17th-century British botanical illustration. It consists of two volumes of watercolors containing 159 folios of exquisite depictions of plants together with meticulous studies of insects, birds, and animals. This catalog, in addition to superb full-page color reproductions of each folio, includes entries that provide the pre-Linnean names given to the plants by Marshal, the modern identifications, historical information on the different species, and bibliographical references. This scholarly catalog fills a gap in the literature and is required for all large academic gardening and natural history collections.DDaniel Starr, Museum of Modern Art, New York
