A Comprehensive Introduction to Keeping Koi Fish
Their striking patterns and delicate coloration are reason enough for the ever-increasing popularity of these beautiful fish, but they are also fun to keep and can even become quite tame. Koi shows attract an enthusiastic following of competitors and spectators alike, and koi societies are thriving as interest in the hobby grows. And, of course, the whole aspect of water gardening—both Western and Oriental—plays an inherent part in the enjoyment of koi-keeping for a great number of koi enthusiasts.
This book is divided into two important sections. Part One is full of practical koi-keeping information and includes chapters on the history of nishikigoi, koi anatomy, pond and filter construction, water quality and filtration, buying koi, feeding koi, seasonal care, landscaping and water gardens, breeding koi, health care, and showing koi.
Part Two is an extensive survey of the many koi varieties, grouped in their currently recognized Japanese classifications. This section is introduced with an explanation of how the seemingly complex Japanese variety names are built up using words that describe the color, pattern, scalation, and luster of koi. A pictorial review of the 14 different classifications opens a more detailed presentation of photographs, illustrations, and descriptions of all the major, and many rare, varieties, from the eye-catching red-and-white Kohaku to the brilliant, metallic Ogon.
