Synopsis
The old king is dying and his sons are contending for the succession. At the very center of this power struggle is a young and beautiful girl. But this is no fairy tale.
Few female Biblical characters are as intriguing as Avishag: a young girl brought from a remote village to the court of the aged King David, to warm the king's bed and stir his aged blood. Reticent and loyal to David, she becomes an unwitting magnet, drawing the attention of the Kingdom's most powerful men. About the Author
YAEL LOTAN was born near Tel Aviv and has lived in Jamaica, England and the United States. She is the author of The Other I, Mangrove Town, Phaedra and a documentary, The Life and Death of Amos Orion. In addition to her writing, Lotan has been the editor of the cultural journal Ariel, a literary critic, translator and a journalist.

The biblical story of King David's famous concubine is reimagined in Avishag, by novelist and translator Yael Lotan (The Other I). Lotan's plot sticks close to the Bible's account: Avishag the Shunammite is a beautiful young girl brought to the palace to revive the listless, dying king. Though their relationship is never consummated, she becomes his loyal attendant, and then, after his death, a pawn in the succession battle between David's sons Solomon and Adoniyah. Full of palace intrigue, Lotan's story goes far in bringing out the inner life of this pivotal character over whom much blood was shed.
