Most people wouldn't automatically think of manhole covers as works of art but that, suggest the authors, may be because they haven't realized what they're looking at. Scouring the pavements of London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam and Berlin, they show how the humble street cover has become a classic of industrial design, as worthy of our admiration as fountains, phone boxes or any other item of street furniture that has iconic status.
Jacopo Pavesi graduated in architecture in 1984, having studied under Franca Helg in Milan. After practicing as an architect for a number of years, he began to move more into interior design, where he enjoys developing projects at the edge of the classic design experience.
Roberta Pietrobelli studied with Luciano Fabro and Davide Benatti at the Academia di Brera. She has enjoyed considerable success as a visual artist on the Italian contemporary art circuit and is now nurturing her talents as a designer. Recently she has been working on projects with Illy Caffè, designing for the most prestigious brand of coffee in Italy.
