All these musical poems, regardless of kind, feature vividly conjured situations and describe human reactions to them so tellingly that one seems to be watching rather than reading them.--Booklist.

Impressions of Japan, some mythopoeia, and personal recollections make up this singing collection. Harmon modulates from the plaintive airs of the Japanese pieces to the sexy dance-band swing of the mythmaking "A Stillness at Kiawah" to the chamber music of the memory poems. The stuff of the impressionist pieces--the garden, teatime, and the sea-dependent life of an island--is so Irish as well as Japanese that virtually every one could be set in either country. More conflation of cultures animates "A Stillness at Kiawah," a long song of dispossession and magical, procreative revival that revels in the resemblances of American Indian and Irish mythologies. The recollective poems include first-person lyrics of apparent direct memory and two long, lightly fictional narratives about young Martin's (not Maurice's) experiences at Catholic boarding school and as an undergraduate in Dublin, distracted by first love. All these musical poems, regardless of kind, feature vividly conjured situations and describe human reactions to them so tellingly that one seems to be watching rather than reading them. Ray Olson
