Synopsis
What began as a pretext for examining the unhealthy relationship between politicians and the media turned into something deeper and more powerful as Modell tracked the ailing British right wing through the dark hours of their ejection from the government. Modell's images are articulate, funny and undermining in a way that obviates the need to know about recent Brit politics. It's enough to understand that after sixteen years in power, the Tories were ageing, out of touch and bamboozled by the loss of their warrior-woman leader Margaret Thatcher. Thereafter, Modell's ruthlessly revealing black and white images of the pinstriped, 'stiff upper lip' throwbacks, 1950s-time-trapped party faithful and boozy old titans in wrinkled suits, facing a voracious media machine, are supreme examples of documentary photography that speak to everyone. If, as Stephen Norris says in his introduction, "Political parties are tribes," then every tribe on the planet should fear the approach of Modell's camera. Tory Story is as close as you can get to vivisection by lens without drawing blood.
