Neal Preston’s collection of Led Zeppelin insider shots are some of the most revealing and entertaining ever seen, taken at the private jets, at the recording sessions, and at the aftershows, and his record of the band at their peak reverberates loudly enough to reach both serious Zeppelin fans and the casually curious.

In 1968, the electrifying potion of musical greats Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham exploded onto the rock scene as Led Zeppelin. Their palpable, walloping beats in combination with their extraordinarily lyrical atmospherics quickly transcended the boundaries of traditional music to earn them the moniker "Gods of Rock." In Led Zeppelin: Shadow Taller Than Our Souls, Charles R. Cross looks past the over-told saga of Zeppelin's offstage antics to reexamine the reasons why the band garnered millions of screaming fans in the first place—the exquisite depth of their music. In an unprecedented format filled with interactive, historic memorabilia, this charged piece of rock criticism surveys Zeppelin's entire career, explores their landmark contributions, album by album, and displays stunning photographs and significant ephemera.
Charles R. Cross once had hair as long and busy as Robert Plant's but his trousers weren't quite as tight. Cross was editor of American music magazine The Rocket from 1985 to 2000. He is the author of seven books, including Room Full of Mirrors: A Biography of Jimi Hendrix; Cobain Unseen; and Heavier than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain, which won the ASCAP Timothy White Award for Outstanding Biography. Cross writes for numerous newspapers and magazines on music, pop culture and parenting. He lives near Seattle. You can find him, and information on his books or lectures, at www.charlesrcross.com.
