In this book, well-known former Bramshill Police College tutor Peter Villiers explains the role of the police in the UK, from their Victorian origins to the police forces and police organizations of present day. The book includes notes on the role of the UK's Home Secretary in relation to law and order and public safety, a glossary of 'policespeak,' and a timeline spanning more than 200 years. It is an ideal introduction that will be of interest to a wide readership, including students and people thinking of a career in any of the spheres of modern-day policing. The book covers such key topics as: what policing involves • the purpose of policing • how it is policy led and managed • a short history of policing • the role of the police officer • police forces and police authorities • special squads, teams, and police units • police powers • the UK's Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) • issues of identity card control • public safety and law and order issues • corruption and deception • crime prevention • police behavior, ethics, and discipline • human rights and policing • the future of policing.

Peter Villiers was Head of Human Rights at the National Police Leadership Faculty at Bramshill. Through his work at the Police Staff College and beyond, he has gained a unique insight into the challenges and demands of police work and gained from the experience of an extensive range of experts. He has written several books, including "Police Leadership in the Twenty-first Century", and "Policing A Safe, Just and Tolerant Society" (both with Robert Adlam, Waterside Press).
'An authorative account of the historical development and contempory practice of police work. It will provide useful insights into policing to students pursuing academic courses in Higher Education and will be of considerable use and interest to those considering policing as a career as well as to serving practitioners': Policing Today 'A substantial introduction to Policing ... will offer any potential recruit an opportunity to discuss and debate before he/she commences learning Police law with its all-important definitions and Powers of Arrest': Internet Law Book Reviews. 'A valuable text because it covers the broad varying aspects of policing and investigation, providing a very useful insight. The author is certainly not reluctant to state his own views and I am of the view that this will provide a catalyst for productive discussion': Dr Peter Hall, Coventry University. 'A good informative book, explaining policy to practice': John Rotherham, St Helens College 'Very well structured. Liked the Glossary and Timeline. Excellent historical base': Ann Kneebone, Truro and Penwith College
