This book has been written to help the wonderful team who are undertaking the embroidery to understand the context in which the original Tapestry was made. The aim is to produce the five metres of embroidery that could sit alongside the Tapestry in Bayeux during 2006, about 940 years after the original was made. The preface covers some of the events taking place in Yorkshire during the momentous months of the autumn 1066 that so profoundly affected the history of England. It is not clear why these northern events are not already part of our national consciousness. Perhaps the preface will help to rectify this omission and increase awareness of this neglected part of our heritage. The text covere some practical working tips and instructions. The special stitches are explained and the story, significance and iconography behind the images in the six panels is told. The history of the original tapestry tells the fascinating facts and theories about who, how, when and why it was made. The techniques of spinning and natural dyeing that are relevant to the construction of the preface are explained. There are also some comments and lessons and a short history of the Reading copy of the Bayeux Tapestry The book is extensively illustrated with large images that could be traced to make copies of the images.
