When Christopher Columbus made landfall on the Caribbean islands he found tribes of people still firmly rooted in the Stone Age. Within decades, however, Spanish explorers had made contact with cultures in the Mesoamerican isthmus that lay beyond the Caribbean who possessed far greater technological prowess. Aztec and Maya civilizations were ancient societies with vast wealth and far-reaching influences, their cultures deriving from much earlier civilizations. In Historical Atlas of Ancient America their highly developed systems of religion, politics, economics and agriculture are described in vivid detail, along with those of their predecessors, the Olmec and Toltec. Specially commissioned maps and superb color photography of the temples, towns, and artifacts of these amazing empire builders bring the subject to vivid life.

About the Author:
NORMAN BANCROFT HUNT graduated from Kingston School of Art in 1968. He was elected fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute in 1975 and is currently a lecturer and researcher in visual theory and cultural studies at the Kent Institute of Art and Design. As an author he has written numerous books about Native American art and culture, including the award-winning ‘People of the Totem’.
From Library Journal:
Hunt, the author of over 15 books on Native America (e.g., People of the Totem), here presents a lay reader's overview of the Mesoamerican cultures from about 1500 B.C.E. to about 1500 C.E. (e.g., Olmec, Maya, and Aztec). After defining terms and giving a summary of the cultures to be presented in a two-page introduction, Hunt moves on to explore each culture in seven enlightening chapters. The energetic and readable text is accompanied by many color illustrations and maps (either in the first two pages of most chapters to pinpoint major sites or within the text to show building locations at given sites). Perhaps the most refreshing quality of this attractive tome is the author's uncompromising honesty whenever little is known. Suitable for both public and academic libraries.
