Pre-Gr. 1. This colorful picture book features a version of the familiar number-pattern song "The Ants Go Marching" as well as a series of visual quests to locate one particular ant. Each double-page spread displays a large numeral, a like number of ants, and a strikingly illustrated, cutaway view of mazelike ant trails beneath the ground. Somewhere in that maze, among the rocks, roots, grubs, and lost buttons, ants engage in unlikely activities such as attending a "Beetles" concert or occupying a Victorian house, all shown in vertical cross sections. First published in 1993 in a lift-the-flap version titled Amazing Anthony Ant, the book has been redesigned; the flaps are gone and the enlarged format features a spacious layout. Spread by spread, the book challenges children to find tiny Anthony Ant, differentiated by his red hat, yellow shirt, and red backpack.
