Synopsis

In Waxing West, Daniella, newly arrived in the US from Romania, is haunted by the ghosts of the deposed dictator Ceausescu and his wife Elena until she experiences 9/11. Thida San in Eyes of the Heart, cannot rid herself of the horrific memory of her daughter’s execution during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. In My Political Israeli Play, Miriam Bloom, a young Israeli woman living in the US, is asked by her agent to write a political play. America Dreaming juxtaposes a professor discussing the policies governing American colonists with the experience of a young Japanese woman in the US during World War II. The Black Eyed skewers traditional views on sex, family and terrorism as four Arab women from different periods wait at the ‘Gates of Martyrs.’

Book Description

This anthology of plays reflects a broad range of viewpoints and experiences from women of different nationalities. In Waxing West, a woman newly arrived in the US from Romania is haunted by the ghosts of the deposed dictator Ceausescu until she experiences 9/11. About the Author

Carol Martin is a Professor of Drama at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Martin’s recent books include Theatre of the Real (Palgrave 2013) and Dramaturgy of the Real on the World Stage (Palgrave cloth 2011, paper 2012). In addition, she is the guest editor of two special issues of TDR “Performing the City” (fall 2014) which  is part of her ongoing critical inquiry into the ways in which performance creates social and political meanings and contexts and “Documentary Theatre” (fall 2006)about her work on theatre about real events.

Saviana Stanescu is a poet and playwright, based in New York.
