Synopsis
This book is a guide to pupils aged 11-13 who are attempting problems in competitions such as the Junior Mathematical Olympiad, which are administered by the UKMT and similar organisations. Such problems provide much more of a challenge for able pupils than typical exercises from school textbooks do. Although the mathematical content of the problems ought to be familiar, it is often not obvious how to solve them. They may require using mathematical ideas in an unfamiliar context or combining techniques in a novel way. This handbook discusses how to discover strategies for tackling unusual problems and offers advice on presenting clear and complete solutions. Written with the pupil in mind, the book covers all of the section B questions set in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad papers over sixteen years of the competition.
