Mary Costello grew up in County Galway. The China Factory was nominated for the Guardian First Book Award in 2012. Her debut novel, Academy Street, was published by Canongate in 2014. Her stories have been published in various anthologies and broadcast on radio. She lives in Dublin.
Irish writer Costello shows a mastery of the short-fiction form in her first collection. Her prose is subtle, strong, and lyrical, while her knowledge of human nature yields memorable characters. Common themes in these stories are the shock of loneliness, the inability of people to communicate with honesty, the effects of shame, the fear of self-disclosure, and the strain of infidelity and cruelties on relationships. Through variations in style, using both male and female points of view, she depicts modern Irish lifestyles. In “And Who Will Pay Charon?,” a remorseful bachelor recounts his history with the local madwoman, later to discover that his youthful rejection may have deeply affected her life. “The Sewing Room,” told from the point of view of a retiring teacher, portrays the great betrayal in her life and how its pain still resonates. A long-term marriage sadly gone sterile is portrayed in “Sleeping with a Stranger.” This fine collection belongs in every library with short-fiction fans and readers of literary fiction. --Ellen Loughran
