Synopsis

A handy photo guide to recognising and reading Arabic script. Compiled by a career linguist, educator and translator and based on his own experience of learning the Arabic script from the bilingual signage on display in public spaces in the United Arab Emirates, this full-colour publication introduces the reader to the characters, variations and pronunciations in an accessible, step-by-step format. Suitable for use by travellers, students and academics, A Photographic Guide to Arabic Scripts contains more than 250 of the most attractive and instructive photos from a gallery of thousands. These have been systematically sorted and ordered by the author to provide a reader-friendly introduction to the Arabic alphabet.

About the Author

Andrew Swift is a former teacher of modern languages, and is now a freelance translator. The idea for 'Arabic Script - A Photographic Guide' came to him on an extended visit to the United Arab Emirates when he realised that the bilingual shop names and street signs were an ideal visual aid for teaching the rudiments of the Arabic alphabet to beginners in the language. He toured the main streets, souqs and malls of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah taking more than 4,000 photos which he then sorted into a reader-friendly order.
