Synopsis
Goodwood Anecdotes is the second book by Peter Redman recalling events at the Goodwood motor circuit in the early years, and includes personal stories from 47 of his friends and acquaintances. Their unique and often amusing anecdotes, together with more than 200 of their photographs, bring to life those wonderful days spent watching the famous, and not so famous, driving fantastic machines of various shapes and sizes. Contributors include several racing drivers, an engine tuner, a team mechanic, a marshal and an officer of the law. Most of their tales, like the photographs accompanying them, have never previously been published. - the young man who built himself a kit-car so that he could go motor racing and went on to become a works driver for two of the top sports car teams of the day. - memories of Mike Hawthorn by a friend who knew him before he was famous, who shared his love of Riley sports cars and who owns Mike's car to this day. - of cycle racing, which started at Goodwood before motor racing and continues to this day. - and much more. About the Author
Peter Redman was born in Emsworth, Hampshire, in 1932, and received his secondary education as a boarder at The Grammar School, Steyning, in Sussex. The family had moved to Bognor Regis by 1939, so that when the first motor race meeting was held at Goodwood in 1948 he was there, and he attended almost every National and International meeting held at the circuit until its closure in 1966. On leaving school he went into the furnishing business and later he and his wife set up and ran a successful Soft Furnishing Workshop serving the area of East Hampshire and West Sussex. Following a health problem, which forced Peter to give up this type of work, he enrolled (as a very mature student) on a three year, full time City and Guilds course in Technical Graphics at Portsmouth College of Art and Design, and attained two diplomas. He spent the next 15 years in industry as a Technical Illustrator for design, development and marketing with two international companies. Since retiring, he has been busy continuing with free-lance work, which has included commissions of classic cars for their owners and a variety of book illustrations of buildings and machinery as well as interesting vehicles. All the pen and ink illustrations and cartoons in this book are Peter's own work. Over the years, Peter has restored and run several interesting cars including three Daimlers, the oldest being a 1936 Light 15, which he ran for 32 years, and four Trojans, of which the oldest, a 1924 Utility Tourer, he rescued from 29 years in a barn, restored it in a back yard and then ran it for 56 years. It is one of the most original Trojans on the road and photographs of it have appeared in a number of vintage car books.
