In January 1945 Ian Milner realized his childhood ambition to join the Merchant Navy as an officer cadet. Little did he suspect that within four months he would be abandoning his first ship as she sank below the waves of the Mediterranean.
It was the first of many experiences which the author recounts during his sea-going years. This is a story crammed with anecdotes of danger and excitement, always told with tongue-in-cheek humour. A merchant seaman's life is nothing if not varied -- transporting German POWs, refugees and communtsts, carrying farm animals and even a zoo were all part of life on board, as was the sudden death of a captain at sea.
