As an ex Navy man and lover of ships, the Author always felt sad seeing vessels towed off to ship-breakers; he decided eight years ago to try and document as many preserved ships as possible. He was involved in the preservation of HMS Belfast in London, having worked in the engine room whilst being made ready for display; he also raised funds to buy HMS Alliance, the submarine on display at Gosport, Hampshire. Gerry acknowledges his deepest appreciation to all those dedicated people around the world who spend much time and labour preserving these beautiful warships, saving them for posterity.

He bought an ex Power boat MTB where his son was born, converting and living on it (she is shown in the book). Gerry worked as a centre lathe turner at several engineering firms, finally emigrating to West Australia in 1968. He worked at a marine engineering firm and then became self-employed working on construction sites all over the country.
