Karl Marx dreamt of a world free from exploitation, inequality, and unemployment. Growing up in a rapacious capitalist society, Marx sought to address the evils of the world through new ways of thinking. His solution? Revolution!
Marx is the second in Corinne Maier and Anne Simon's collection of graphic novels exploring lives of the twenty-first century's most controversial and outspoken figures. Their first collaboration, Freud, is one of Nobrow's most popular titles.

Anne Simon was born in 1980 in France. She studies in the Beaux-Arts in Angoulême, and then in the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, one of the most prestigious art schools in France. In 2004, she received the "New Talent" prize at the Angoulême festival, and she released her first comic book "Persephone in the Underworld" in 2006.
Corinne Maier was born in 1963 in Geneva. As a writer, economist, historian and psychoanalyst, she has produced around 15 non-fiction books on subjects like psychoanalysis, society, history and humor. Though at first her interests seem diffuse, she finds the common links between them. Her books are bestsellers in her native France and some (such as Hello Laziness) have been translated into several languages.
Her recent work has centered on work, family and the nation. Hailed as a counter-culture heroine by the New York Times, she proudly acknowledges not being a member of any club, scientific society or political party and not being on anyone's payroll.
A 2015 USBBY Outstanding International Book
Simon’s art is cartoony in the swift-lined, floating-figure manner of Jules Feiffer, while Maier’s script for Marx waxes romantic and sentimental over revolution. [ ] Overall, an entertaining, if swift, depiction of a still-potent (though today, perhaps considerably less so) intellectual giant.
Booklist
A remarkable work [...] Marx also has the brilliant use of color that illustrators of young people’s genres count upon and badly need. [...] young readers are destined to enjoy this book immensely.
The Comics Journal
Maier’s biographies of Marx and Freud, originally published in 2013 in French, accomplish animation, selectivity, and context. [ ] an invigorating reading experience [ ] Teens will appreciate the irreverent tone and easy-to-read graphic format. They may learn a thing or two along the way about these men and their groundbreaking accomplishments.
Jewish Book Council
The books’ scripts are breezy and considered, and deliver insight into both thinkers’ theories and personal lives without expanding on a personal agenda. Maier weaves an intricate web that is deceptively plain but clearly shows how the protagonists’ theories often flowed from personal conflicts in their daily lives. [ ] intriguing ideas get the chance to shine and embed themselves in the reader’s mind [ ] The cheerful and even flirtatious drawings from French illustrator Anne Simon are a perfect match for this breezy but intriguing introduction to these great thinkers. [ ] Her skill at layering a comic page with mischievous constructions is unparalleled and is never detrimental to its reading. [ ] Simon and Maier have produced an easy accessible biography series in Freud and Marx that is equally informative and playful. I can only hope that there are more books in the works for this series.
Broken Frontier
Marx is engaging and educational with a bit of humor, and a perfect intro to one of the most controversial social writers of our time.
Wink Books
Maier and Simon present Marx's full biography, without exception, which presents a clear picture of Marx, the man, not necessarily the revolutionary. Whether working on a paper or just out of curiosity, this is an accessible look into the life of Karl Marx for teens and young adults.
