France is fabulously rich in incised effigial slabs ? a two-dimensional form of funeral monument popular from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century ? and this book is the first study written in English to examine on detail their unique qualities in a particular region of that country. It uncovers their various meanings, as grave markers and tools to encourage intercession for those they commemorate, and how they were commissioned by a socially diverse range of patrons, from ecclesiastical grandees to the lesser clergy, and from knights and esquires to widows and members of the professional classes. The social and artistic aspects of the art form are fully discussed in an incisive introduction of seven chapters, followed by an inventory of the 187 known slabs from the five départements of the Pays de la Loire, discussing each slab in detail, with full references and inscriptions transcribed and translated, and an exhaustive bibliography and index The expression used a subtitle is found in several surviving contracts and illustrates the concern of the patrons that the craftsman should engrave the memorial 'well and truly', recording the social status, piety and family of the deceased in a fetching manner. The portraits on the slabs are clear evidence of bespoke commissions. This sumptuous book contains nearly 250 colour illustrations, of the slabs themselves and of important antiquarian drawings, such as those in the Roger de Gaignières collections in the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Bodleian Library in Oxford, recording slabs which no longer survive or with details no longer visible.
