A publication made to document YMEDACA, a two-year project by live artist Hester Reeve at Yorkshire Sculpture Park featuring full colour in-situ project photography as well as extraordinary new drawings by the artist. Inspired by the collections of the National Arts Education Archive as well as the landscape of the Bretton Estate, YMEDACA stood as a re-mapping of YSP as a contemporary translation of the very first university, Plato’s ‘Academos’, established in ancient Greece. Opening with an introduction to the project and an overview of Reeve’s practice by YSP Senior Curator Helen Pheby, the publication includes newly commissioned essays by Peter Abbs, Karl Rogers and Mark Vernon which challenge current attitudes to university education, the relationship of art to ethics and promote the art of creative living and ends with an interview between Hester Reeve and YSP Programme Coordinator Damon Waldock. As well as charting an innovative Live Art related project, this publication explores the relationship between art and philosophy, and innovates on forms of performance documentation. Hester Reeve is a performance artist who works with Live Art actions, philosophy, dialogues, drawing and photography.
