Reviews

This welcome addition to George’s series of concept books about the senses examines sight by naming some of the most ordinary, and the most beautiful, things in the world: a bright light, a mouse, a reflection, and more. It is also about perspective—about seeing “up here” and “down there,” “near and far,” and “upside down.” And then there are the things we aren’t sure we are seeing, like “nothing” or “shapes in sky.” The simple, elegant illustrations use bright colors and minimal detail to guide the reader to appreciate the concepts of relative size and distance (a hawk sees a rabbit in a hole a long way away), of magnification (a beetle through a hand lens), and of misperception (a monster is really the shadow of a teddy bear). All the while, there is a pair of eyes on every page, maybe seeing what the reader sees—or maybe not? This is full of little surprises that should delight and amuse readers, and nonreaders, of any age. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Amina Chaudhri
