“The Social Worker had mentioned
other
          “youngens
                              “but that night
Chintana saw no sign of any more.
    “Maybe the incresiating cold
                                             “or the
peculiar threat of a storm
                                            “or Belinda
Kite’s birthday
                      “had turned parents
from wrestling with seat belts and car
seats—
           “—from those oh so
                                            “many lists
of baby sitters tacked conveniently by a
phone.

    “Chintana rubbed the violet line
on her thumb as a woman with topaz
clamped on her ears burst past her
towards a small bathroom tucked
under the main stairs.

“ ‘Such a hateful whore,’ the woman
sputstuttersobbed to Chintana,
                                             “to no one
in particular,
                   “diving for the comforts of
lock and running water.

    “Whereupon Chintana’s thumb
abruptly began to sore a little
                                         “and she
felt bleak,
                “as if a thousand
                                       “vengeances
upon vengeances were dicing her
suddenly
               “into hail.

“Though the cause was none too
mysterous
                 “—the front door just stood
wide open.
                          “Though when it had
been flung so Chintana would never
remember.

    “The porch lights were extinguished
too, oddly,
               “and what’s more a shadow
now cut across the threshold,
                                            “though
without moon or stars in the Texas sky
this was an awful impossibility,
                                               “for here
reaching towards her it seemed was a
shadow cast by nothing
                                        “other
                                                   “than
the darkness itself.

“Most would’ve denied the sight with
a turn,
                    “a cry,
                                             “flight,

“but maybe because Chintana too, day
out and night in, could so easily consider
doing the same,
                       “what would leave these
rooms drenched in silence,
                                       “and blood,
“she welcomed him.

“ ‘The orphans’
                        “was all he said.

“And Chintana showed him the way.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Peter Van Sambeek (illustrator). First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition of this unusual book - with number-string sequence on the publisher's prelims copyright page: 2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3 1. Illustrated by Peter Van Sambeek. Printed in the Czech Republic. The book was originally published in 2005 by De Bezige Bij in the Netherlands in a limited edition of 1000 copies, 51 of which were signed. The book was re-issued in a different format in 2012 by Pantheon Books, New York. ***Near fine in pictorial colour illustrated boards, with stitching designs. Illustrated in colour throughout. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of £20.00. Dustwrapper just slightly rubbed and creased at the extremities, mainly at the bottom of the spine. No tears. Dustwrapper has just a hint of fading to the orange on the spine, otherwise bright and clean. ***285 pages. 235mm x 135mm. ***'One Halloween night at a party held at an East Texas ranch house, a local seamstress named Chintana finds herself thrown into the role of chaperone for five rambunctious orphans. Not surprisingly, the children's energies prove barely containable, even with promises of cake and a storyteller. The storyteller, however, is not what anyone expects. Looming and cloaked in dark, he entertains the orphans with a tale twisted out of vengeance and violence. He does not come empty-handed, either. At their feet he sets a long, narrow box sealed with five latches. ***"I am a bad man with a very black heart," he warns them. And it was only that badness and blackness which forced me to seek out what I have carried now for many years and brought this night for you. An unsettling thing to say to anyone, especially to children. But as Chintana soon discovers, this is just the beginning. Her concerns only mount as the storyteller offers more and more menacing details about what consequences lie hidden within that long, narrow box. ***To make matters worse, the orphans, one by one, lean forward and lift the latches ---' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***'Originally published as a large-size limited edition and subsequently performed only on Halloween night as a live shadow show, The Fifty Year Sword is finally available in hardcover, complete with newly stitched illustrations and autumnal quotation marks.' [Quote taken from rear flap of dustwrapper] ***First impression of the first UK edition of this interesting novel, produced to a high standard on art paper, in its original dustwrapper in very nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 6952
