Mackers was coming up for retirement at the time of the call to ‘action’
For many years Mackers had been self-employed in the Landscape and construction industry. Because of that he was the owner of several trucks, some of which he used to import shrubs and trees from Holland. It was therefore nothing new to cross the North Sea or the English Channel, but, to go as far as Moscow, Romania, Croatia and Albania was an entirely new experience as the reader will discover.
In a philosophical manner to which Mackers was prone, he was once heard to say that everything that he had ever done was in preparation for what he was about to do.
