The buildings included on the map, ranging from 1948 to today, reflect the principles of the Hermit Kingdom's three leaders since the end of the Korean War: the distinctive socialist-realism under Kim Il Sung, an expressive modernisation under Kim Jong Il and today's socialist fairyland of Kim Jong Un. The map presents an architectural city unlike any elsewhere.
The map is written and includes photography by Wainwright, and is translated into Northern style Korean by Dongwoo Yim.

Oliver Wainwright is the Guardian's architecture and design critic. Trained as an architect, he has worked for a number of practices, both in the UK and overseas, and written extensively on architecture and design for many international publications. He is also a visiting critic at several architecture schools.
