Having nothing, yet possessing everything, was never more dramatically fulfilled than in the events that sent us to New Zealand. We had lived for four years from 1973 in Olveston, in two of the most prestigious houses in the community, the Old Quaker Meeting House and, subsequently, Hill House. As I have already said, we went into these homes with no personal finance at all, and in that process experienced unique training in the life of faith we were to pursue. How did this come to pass? Our guidance came through the means that the Lord has used repeatedly over these last fifty years. Firstly, and perhaps primarily, he sent his word. At the start of 1977 I was impressed to meditate in the life of Abraham, mentioned throughout Scripture. This was in addition to my daily consecutive reading and meditation in the Bible, which, for me, as with the psalmist, is A lamp to my feet and a light to my path.73 For almost two months I had been contemplating Abraham’s life very carefully and speaking regularly about him, especially during a ministry trip to Norway. When addressing our Olveston community in the Old Meeting House on my return, I focused on the testimony to Abraham in the great faith chapter Hebrews 11.
