His both parents were opera singers who later became teachers. Due to his parents linguistic combination and to the fact he lived in Switzerland, he mastered six languages. Nevertheless, he wrote mostly in English as he said all the best stories are written in English. - Following a quarter of a century of hard writing, his first great success, Scar¬amouche, set during the French Revolution, was published in 1921 and became instantly an international best seller. His second unparalleled success was Captain Blood (1922).
