Synopsis

Like most young boys, Sam loves DVDs, iPods, and iPhones. He hates the outdoors, and would be happy if it all disappeared. Then he goes to stay with his Nanna who loves the outdoors and going for long walks in the Australian bush. Through storytelling, Nanna begins to teach Sam about the bush: its shelter, food, and water. "There’s plenty of food in the bush," she explains to a bored Sam and his grumbling stomach. Soon, Sam realizes through his own journey that the bush has an abundance of good things to offer including adventure. Brimming with themes that will promote discussion among young readers, the ideas explored include journeys, the environment, storytelling, aboriginal knowledge of the bush, and intergenerational understanding.

About the Author:

Sally Morgan is an Aboriginal artist and a writer whose books include The Human Body, My Place, and Weather. Ezekiel Kwaymullina and Sally Morgan are coauthors of the Curly and the Fent series. Bronwyn Bancroft is an Aboriginal artist whose works are collected and shown internationally. Her pervious books include An Australian 1 2 3 of Animals, An Australian ABC of Animals, Patterns of Australia, and Malu Kangaroo.

K-Gr 2–Living in Australia, Sam's grandmother loves the bush that surrounds her house. On their long walks into the gum forest to the waterhole, spiky shrubs scratch the boy's legs and mosquitoes bite him. Though Nanna tells him about the many good things there, Sam would be happy if they all disappeared. One night he dreams of wandering in the bush lost and alone. Remembering what Nanna has told him, he finds edible berries when his stomach grumbles and shelter in a hollow gum tree during a storm. The singing of birds leads him to fresh water at the waterhole. Worn out from his adventure, he sleeps in the shade of a tree and wakes in his own bed. With a new awareness of his surroundings, Sam gladly accompanies his grandmother on her next journey to the waterhole. Bright, full-color spreads are filled with mammals, birds, and reptiles among tall gum trees while the waterhole, filled with fish, seems to rise out of the landscape. Stunning illustrations feature thick black outlines and intricate patterns, evoking the Aboriginal culture of the book's creators.
