This picture book opens without any real setup: Leaves for me to throw . . . and red galoshes. We see a girl and leaves pouring out of one of the red galoshes and into the sky; a boy has tied string around the other, and it becomes a kite. From there, the wind picks up and the rain moves in, and the little boy’s and girl’s imaginations grow along with the storm. The galoshes aren’t rain boots, though that may be what they’re called in Australia, where this was originally published. Rather, they’re wide shoe covers that, we find out, belong to the kids’ grandmother. The boy and girl use the galoshes to gather mud, as drumsticks on a drainpipe (downpipe drumbeat, rain on my street . . . and red galoshes), and as oars to row a bathtub. There’s no framework to make it clear that this happens in the kids’ imaginations, but the audience likely won’t mind. The poetic text with simple rhymes works in harmony with Bentley’s muted watercolors. The palette is cool and pale, with the exception of the bright red footwear. A fanciful romp that might well brighten a rainy day. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ann Kelley
