One of the most important functions of any leader is hiring the right staff. Yet most leaders have had little or no formal training in how to make these decisions.
This is the first book to provide practical solutions to this dilemma specifically prepared for all types of Christian organisations.
This book outlines, in a thorough yet easy-to-read format, a complete guide to selecting the right person for any role in various Christian organisations.
Topics include the unique selection challenges faced by Christian organisations; the importance of carefully crafting a Position Description; Conducting Revealing Interviews; the Power of Careful Listening; How to use Intuition; listening to promptings of The Spirit; Conducting Insightful Reference Checking and Making the Final Decision.
This is complemented by chapters on when and how to terminate staff and easy-to-apply solutions to keeping your best people. The challenge of protecting oneself against hiring sexual perpetrators is also discussed.
The book comes with a free 120 page User Guide containing additional educational material and all of the forms necessary to use this comprehensive system.

As a young psychologist, I wanted to be a psychoanalyst. I even went to London and studied with Anna Freud, the daughter of Sigmund Freud.Though I quickly outgrew that idea, much of what I learned in those years has helped me to understand people. That's partly what has made a career as a psychologist so gratifying. The more important part is that it allowed me to help people.Soon after returning from London, I joined the worldwide managing consulting firm The Hay Group. This opened an exciting new world for me, Executive Appraisal. I learned from the masters and have been doing that work ever since 1980 as a private practitioner.Over the last forty years, this is been a key part of my consulting practice. At last count, I've evaluated well over 3000 job and promotional candidates. These include CEO and Board Member applicants, middle-level and senior managers, technical specialists, sales managers and salespeople as well as entry-level staff. This brings me to my first book, Seeing Behind the Job Applicant's Mask Before Hiring. Everyone who is a job applicant naturally puts on a persona. This is designed to help them get hired. But, it mostly isn't real. Only after being hired do we learn what this person is really like, warts and all.The book is designed to show people the common reasons for hiring mistakes and, more importantly, how to prevent them from happening.Hiring the wrong people costs organisations billions of dollars a year. (Yes, I do mean billions.) That's in part because very few people are well trained in hiring, and thus they hire the persona and only later discover who this person really is.My hope is that this book will reduce workplace stress and enhance the happiness of people at work. This happens when you enjoy the people you work with and know that you can count on them. The second book is a joint effort with my old friend and co-author, Rev. Peter Corney. Peter established The Arrow Leadership Program in Australia about 25 years ago. This is a two year course designed for young Christian leaders. I have taught at the Program for about 21 years.Hire Right, First Time: A Pracctical Guide for Staffing Christian Organizations is the only book specifically designed to teach how to attract, select and retain the best people in a wide variety of Christian institutions.
Rev Peter Corney has been an Anglican pastor for over fift years, having managed one of Australia's largest Anglican churches in Australia.Peter is widely recognised as a champion of leadership training for clergy. He founded Arrow Leadershi, and is the author of twelve books.
