Synopsis

Discover how Sal's pet cat, Matt, makes her feel nervous, shy and tongue-tied in this fun, rhyming educational book. Is she the only one who has a pet cat like Matt? Find out how she learns to live with Matt and build her confidence! Can you find Matt, hiding on each page? Kids, try out the fun activities in the back of the book to learn more about dealing with Matt. There is also a useful adults page at the end of the book to guide discussion with children about shyness and performance anxiety and managing it in constructive ways. "The Cat's Got My Tongue- A book about Shyness and Performance Anxiety" is one of four books in The Building Resilience picture book series. This series gives children, teachers and parents advice on how to deal with common situations and uncomfortable feelings. It also encourages parent-child discussion about difficult topics. Some topics (feelings and even common life events such as death) are traditionally taboo or are challenging for adults to talk about. If adults are uncomfortable talking about issues or feelings, it is even more difficult for children to discuss them or to know how to effectively cope with situations. This range of books opens the communication pathways, in a fun way, and helps children and adults face matters without shame, embarrassment or stigma. The author, Doctor Harmony, is an Australian psychiatrist and mother who has the desire to help build resilience in children by promoting awareness of feelings, positive communication and development of constructive coping skills. Having seen many adults who struggle with these issues, her books help to instill coping skills early in life. The books are easy for children to relate to and understand, especially as feelings are usually difficult for children to grasp, given the abstract nature of it. Look out for the other books in Building Resilience book series one: Jo, My Sad Hippo (A book about Sadness) My Pet Monster (A book about Worry) Kanga, My Dragon of Anger If you like series one, look out for series two! REVIEW by Kirkus Review "Matt appears in each illustration for readers to find; sometimes he’s interacting with Sal, but other times, he’s lurking elsewhere. It’s a good analogy for people with anxiety who, even when they are feeling good, wonder when uncertainty is going to strike... this book has moments of true understanding and empathy...the illustrations...have plenty of color and child-friendly appeal...the book’s fun activities, such as a maze and a word search, should engage young independent readers." REVIEW by Stephen Thompson, Editor and Publisher (Essteemedia) "What a great series. Gorgeous pictures, cute rhymes and wonderfully presented. What more could you ask for in a series of kids' books? Well. you could ask for an important message about behaviour, and maybe a note to parents about how to reinforce that message, and maybe a game or two to play. Check. The series has all that. They are not just picture books but are also handy reference books for parents ... and even adults in general. They might be set out as books for children, but there are a few tips in there that could help many grown-ups. Highly recommended for children of all ages."

About the Author

The author, Dr Harmony is an Australian psychiatrist and mother who is dedicated to building a more resilient and confident young generation. The books are based on her clinical practice as a psychiatrist and her personal experience. She has seen many adults in clinical practice, for over fourteen years, with issues related to low self-confidence and self-esteem and difficulties coping with uncomfortable feelings, Dr Harmony is passionate about addressing these issues in childhood, with the hope of preventing mental illness in later life. Dr Harmony hopes to encourage children to identify their feelings, to express in constructive ways and to take positive action. By openly discussing the topics in a non-threatening and fun way, it helps children realise that other kids have similar experiences, that they are not alone and there is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - When adults are not comfortable talking about and facing uncomfortable feelings, such as self-doubt, it is then difficult for their children to learn how to deal with these feelings constructively. 'Bottled' emotions increase the risk of physical and emotional health problems. Some people turn to drugs and alcohol, comfort-eating, gambling or domestic violence. It also fractures relationships and families. Vast amounts of research suggest that promoting resilience (such as constructive use of our uncomfortable feelings) reduces the risk of children later developing behavioural problems, being bullied or bullying others, having substance abuse, mental illness, suicide and school dropout. Resilience can also promote academic performance and can even improve treatment outcomes in adults with anxiety and depression. Treating emotional and social problems when they have already developed is more difficult and costly than preventing it. We need to be instilling our children with skills early in life to prevent problems from happening. The message is clear: Everyone will be confronted with life challenges and stress, no matter what age. Uncomfortable feelings are also normal. Once we accept this and can identify our feelings, we then have choices about how to deal with them constructively. This empowers children and families, reduces helplessness and brings hope. Resilience is a lifetime priceless gift we can teach our children with endless benefits. All Dr Harmony's books: -Have 'find the character' on each illustrated page; -Rhyme (research suggests rhyming books lead to advanced readers); -Have a fun activities section for children to emphasise the messages of each book; -Have an adults' page provides tips to adults to help children to work through each feeling in real-life situations; -Are easy for children to relate to. TIP: Get your children to draw their cats and give them personalised names! Their cats can then be referred in daily life whenever they feel self-doubt or shy. This reminds them about the strategies discussed in the book. The more frequently the concepts are used, eventually it is easier for children to independently problem-solve life challenges.
