Alex Bishop returns from a summer abroad to his hometown of Bridgwater, fi nding luck and circumstances have turned bitterly sour. At once effectively homeless and jobless, just when he needs it the least he falls victim to a vicious assault - an event with repercussions that refuse to leave him in peace. Alex is faced with a relatively humble mission: to regain some security and a healthy degree of self-esteem. But when you have empty pockets, clinical depression, and a shortfall of nous, that can prove to be a very tall order to fill. Through friendships tested and loyalties stretched, the struggle to keep a roof of some kind over his head, hostile working environments and petty crime, to the tempestuous crescendo of events that will occur on the night of the Guy Fawkes' Carnival, Alex's fight for his corner starts to feel like a fight for his life. Alex Bishop thought the everyday world of smalltown Bridgwater could hold for him no secret or surprise. He had no idea how wrong he could be.
