Fashion surrounds us . . . and some might even say overwhelms us. Whether it’s shopping for clothes or getting dressed in the morning, it’s easy to feel at odds with a world that seems to be all about appearances. But not only can fashion be fun, silly, impulsive, and even inexpensive — it can also be a really rewarding avenue of self-expression for everyone.
By starting with the most basic formula (clothes + art = fashion), Learn To Speak Fashion strips away the anxiety and artifice to get to the heart of what makes clothing so much more than what we put on our bodies. The lessons within these pages range from understanding how to dress every part of the body and how to make your own pair of pants, to learning how to harness your design ideas with an inspiration board, or hold a fashion show in your backyard.

Introduction:
From the outside, fashion seems like its own universe, doesn’t it? A universe already too huge, too perfect, too complete to possibly be a part of.
After all, fashion is full of incredibly talented people creating incredible things: from designers dreaming up amazing clothes, to photographers and stylists creating photo shoots for glossy magazines. It was all there. What could you really have to offer?
But guess what? The closer you get to fashion, the more you see that the distance you feel is all in your head. The truth is that there are all kinds of gaps in the fashion universe that hadn’t been filled gaps that can be filled by people like you.
As a fashion writer, I’ve talked to lots of major fashion personalities who have told me that they felt intimidated by fashion as kids. Now they love it. The only way they could kick that fear? Believing that they had a voice worth sharing with the world.
If you feel the call of fashion, embrace it. The more you get involved, the more you’ll discover. Let’s get started!
