Synopsis

A guidebook for young readers on a traditional hunting practice that has sustained the Inuit people for generations

This book provides easy-to-follow directions for finding success while completing a hunt at an aglu—a seal breathing hole in sea ice through which hunters hunt seals. This style of hunting is a time-honored and traditional method that has been used by Inuit for generations. Experienced outdoorsman William Flaherty guides novice hunters through the basic principles of this ancient style of hunting, including packing a qamutiq, a specially designed sled that travels on snow and ice; how to properly dress for long hours in the cold; the best methods for identifying and assessing agluiit; enduring the long wait time by the aglu; and how to correctly shoot and butcher a seal While hunting skills can only truly be perfected through numerous trips out onto the ice, Aglu Hunting provides young hunters the basic information needed to properly and safely prepare for their first hunting experience.
